Q. What is Usenet?

A. Per WikiPedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

"Usenet, a portmanteau of "user" and "network", is a world-wide distributed Internet discussion system. It evolved from the general purpose UUCP architecture of the same name.

It was conceived by Duke University graduate students Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis in 1979. Users read and post public messages (called articles or posts, and collectively termed news) to one or more categories, known as newsgroups. Usenet resembles bulletin board systems (BBS) in most respects, and is the precursor to the various web forums which are widely used today; and can be superficially regarded as a hybrid between Email and web forums. Discussions are threaded, with modern news reader software, as with web forums and BBSes, though posts are stored on the server sequentially.

One notable difference from a BBS or web forum is that there is no central server, nor central system owner. Usenet is distributed among a large, constantly changing conglomeration of servers which store and forward messages to one another. These servers are loosely connected in a variable mesh.[clarification needed] Individual users usually read from and post messages to a local server operated by their ISP, university or employer. The servers then exchange the messages between one another, so that they are available to readers beyond the original server."

Q. I saw some illegal content on your site. What should I do?

A. Newscat does not support any type of illegal content. Our service is an automated process that indexes millions of usenet pictures, which are all posted to the internet through other Usenet providers. (Newscat.com does not allow posting).. There are thousands of usenet providers across the globe, each one with a few to hundreds of thousands of users, and altogether they post aproximately 4 terabytes of information each day to usenet. As such, it is impossible for us to monitor the millions of files across our network. Just as google.com doesn't post the information their search engine indexes, Newscat.com does not post the usenet pictures and movies you find via our service.

We will, however, destroy any illegal content within our cache that is brought to our attention.

If you find content that you believe to be illegal, please send an email to support@newscat.com with the subject heading "Illegal Content Removal"

Please tell us the ARCHIVE DATE, NEWSGROUP, PAGE NUMBER and FILENAME of the illegal content so we may destroy it as soon as possible. Failure to include all of the necessary information will delay or prevent us from taking the necessary action. Please be as specific as possible as there are there are millions of pages in our archives.
